The History of the Pantsuit

As I begin to prepare for my next project, "The Myth of the Pantsuit", I thought I'd share what little I've found out about the history of the pantsuit.
It seems that the pantsuit as we know it, didn't come into being until the mid 1960's.
Women didn't really even wear pants until the 1920's, and that wasn't for fashion reasons, but work reasons.

Coco Channel, designed a rather masculine-styled pantsuit in 1933.

(Marlene Dietrich modeling)

Actresses like Katherine Hepburn made wearing men's suits fashionble among some women. But these suits were a little " too, too" for most.

French designer, André Courrèges, created a women's safari-styled pantsuit in 1965.
But pantsuits as we know them, did not come into being until 1966, when designer Yves Saint-Laurent introduced his awesome "Le Smoking" pantsuit.

Don't you just Le love it?

" Le Smoking tuxedo suit for women" set the standard for pantsuits today.
It grabbed the attention of the fashion industry, and offered a powerful alternative for women in the business world.

So, as I was saying...
The first pantsuits were made of wood...

Hillary Clinton's "Citizen Ambassador" speech

"Be the special envoys of your ideals.
Use the communication tools at your disposal, to advance the interests of our nation and humanity everywhere.
Be Citizen Ambassadors using your personal and professional lives to forge Global partnerships,
built on a common commitment to solving our planet's common problems".

Hillary rocks.

Hilldoll hits the town!

Looks like she needs her hair done, but it was great to see her again!

Wednesday night at my pad

O.K., O.K, not true. Hillary simply has been too busy to call lately.
Actually I'll be dining with the fabulous Jenna ZIne of Pantyline Press and Larry Crane, Editor of Tape Op Magazine.
Well, fancypants me, dropping names left and right!
I hope Jenna dishes some Hollywood dirt!

Obsession

Today's subject is OBSESSION.
This is a subject I am often asked about.
Let's explore the topic...shall we?

Let us begin with this simple formula, one I use over and over again in my life.

FASCINATION+PASSION=MUSE

To know me is to watch me use this simple formula over and over again. The subject may change, but the formula does not vary.

Here's my current formula:
A+B+C=HILLARY

A, B and C equal my love of:

A. Icons, pop art, The 60's art aesthetic, Andy Warholism, fun, humor, 60's and 70's T.V., color, line, and form.
B. A Gothic sensibility, mythology, history, ancient archetypes, mystery, feminine power.
C. An overwhelming desire to make the world a better place to live.

"Hillary", the icon, is the most wonderful combination of these things I have found, to date.
This combination sets my mind on fire, and makes me want to create art.
Think about it... a female force so powerful it verges on Super Hero, who looks like a 70's T.V. Mom, who wears a rainbow of bright colored pantsuits, and who is out to save the world.
Hello.

And now it's time for Q+A.
Questions?

A letter to Hillary

My next order of business is to make a video/letter presentation to Hillary...

I need to show her what I'm doing, and ask her permission to continue having art events in her name.

I want to continue to do my small part in creating an excited buzz about everything Hillary is doing, to the art crowd around the country and around the world.

I want my shows to be up-beat and fun, energetic and silly, big and bold. I want my shows to stimulate conversation and make people think.

President Obama has his group of artists, Hillary needs to have hers. Art has a way of speaking to people, that transcends language and affects people on another level. The more art and politics merge, the more change can occur.

Well, this is what I think anyways.
If she agrees, you know I'll give it all I've got!
If she doesn't... I'm prepared to walk away.

I can always paint, um, frogs or flowers or something.
I feel confident that I can bring excitement to frogs and flowers...
but my heart and soul desires to be a part of something much bigger than that.
