Where is Lotti Golden?

It's Sunday, time to play a game. This one is called' "Where are they now?"

Lotti Golden, where is she now?

I honestly don't know the answer to this question. The first person who does will receive a cool prize.

Here's a description of one of her songs off her 1969 album, "Motor-cycle".

"The emcee for this aberrant cabaret is Lotti Golden, nexus of the intemperate adventure starring a cast of sex fiends, drug addicts, and other proponents of the In The Now school of living. Motor-Cycle is exactly the sort of hazy deviant party you always hoped the late-’60s was. It plays out roughly like this: Lotti’s got a thing for this kid Michael, who “lets me ride his motorcycle.” But Michael’s truth machine was starting to breakdown, so she heads to Fay’s, the meet-up spot for her coterie of malcontents. Anabell’s gonna be there, Silky’s gonna be there, Billy is gonna drop by, Celia’s gonna come by. But for Fay, whose French poodles keep her satisfied, it’s her doctor’s pills that keep her high, and she’s in trouble with the meds. She over-doses and dies at the party.

“Hey man, did you hear what happened to Fay? Yeah, it’s really a drag, what a bring-down. So where do you want to go? Rosie’s? That’s cool. Out of sight man, we’ll dig it!”

And so the whole party up and moves to Rosie’s. No pause for introspection on poor Fay’s demise, no lessons learned, none of that crap; the good times must roll on.

Motor-Cycle is that rare party record that’s got a bizarre story behind it while still being a freak-show record that you can throw on at dance parties. To make a crude comparison, it’s as if The Velvet Underground recorded for Motown. In short: debauchery with a beat. Dig it."

Interesting. I wasn't even sure whether or not she is still among the living. Let me know when if you find out. Thanks!

Some argue Golden’s work inspired Amy Winehouse. Ironically a new generation of fans is discovering “Motor-Cycle,” Golden’s tour de force LP via the Internet. The LP was listed in the New York Times "Best of Rock" (Nat Hentoff) along with Bob Dylan and Donovan.

I heard Lotti Golden is working on something new (and extraordinary) now that her “Motor-Cycle” LP has a cult following on the Internet. Also, I heard she’s still great looking. Check out: http://playitagainmax.blogspot.com/2007/03/lotti-golden-motor-cycle-1969.html

Thank you for the information! I'm looking forward to my copy of Motor-cycle coming in the mail. It's been 20 years or so since I've last heard it, but I remember it well.
I can't wait to hear what new work Lotti is working on!
Thanks again, and keep me posted!

Wow! Lotti Golden! I love her record "Motor-Cycle." Recently, the lead singer of the EELS recorded an LP under the alias, "MC Honky," and used a sample from Golden's "Gonna Fays" (amazing track) in one of the songs on the LP "What A Bringdown."

Where is She: I've pondered this as well. A blogger at the playitagainmax.blogspot.com. pretty much sums up the power of Lotti Golden's Motor-Cycle LP for me: "'Really cool record' truly understates the case--everyone I've played the album for seems to go away wondering what hit them..."
Why doesn't Atlantic Records re-release Golden on CD? They reissue pleny of stuff. This LP should be available on itunes for those who want to buy it. Come on, Atlantic, wake up! I read the comments here and I'm hoping we *will* hear from her!

I was so pleased to read about Lotti Golden from other fans! Because the first person to respond wrote in that Lotti may do an interview with WFMU I checked their website and found this: "...Golden's ...album Motor-Cycle is a psychedelic soul trip ...Not yet on CD, it is certainly a crate digging masterpiece. My favorite track is "A Lot Like Lucifer", a sprawling epic that starts out soulful, turns ragtime, leads into a stomper, throws in some fuzz guitar, goes for the Memphis sound, and then tosses in the kitchen sink..."
I love this album, and agree that the LP should be reissued by Atlantic and sold online.

Lotti Golden's work is poetry as much as it is a muscal recording. I'd like to add another description of Golden's work to El-Change-O!'s excellent account. This one is written by Max from the website I previouslly mentioned, Play It Again Max:
"This is a fine soul record with some psychedelic touches and some weird Satan-biker references... Robert Christgau...compares her to Laura Nyro ... & I can definitely hear some similarities (at least with Nyro's earlier work) but Golden has an oddness that puts her in a class by herself. Christgau liked her {Golden's} '71 self-titled album better but I haven't heard that one..."
There's a poem about Motor-Cycle Michael on the back of the record...That should give you a good idea... about what the record is like. Perhaps the song titles will help too: (1) Gonna Fay's, (2) A Lot Like Lucifer (Celia Said Long Time Loser), (3) The Space Queens (Silky Is Sad), (4) Who Are Your Friends, (5) Get Together (With Yourself), (6) You Can Find Him

I happened upon this during a search after the debate last night. Thank you, el-change-o!, for posting about Lotti Golden's "Motor-Cycle"--which has stayed with me since a dear friend played the record. Years later I saw Golden's LP turning up on the Internet, on lots of blogs and websites, generating much discussion. I hope, as well, the record is re-released by Atlantic. Golden's work should should have the broad recognition it has always deserved.

Thanks everyone for your excellent descriptions and information. I hope they release this album soon! I just got my copy in the mail yesterday, but need to find a turn-table. Mine died not too long ago.
I can't wait to hear Lotti on wfmu. I'll check into that.
Familiar call letters, is that Providence?

Finding Lotti Golden here is a welcome surprise. I agree that "Motor-Cycle" should be reissued by Atlantic. Just google Lotti Golden and "A Lot Like Lucifer" (unbelievable song from the LP) and it is apparent Golden has a lot of listeners; Atlantic is missing an opportunity. Here's part of a review @Tiny Mix Tapes by Delorean: "I look forward to a time when labels will once again release hard-driving soul albums that play out like one long, campy musical. I guess R. Kelly’s episodic soap opera “Trapped in the Closet Pts. 1-whatever” is sort of in the ballpark... Lotti Golden leads us into the bizarre excursions of the late-’60s underground... So fertile was the music scene of that period that an album of restlessly epic roadhouse suites could be released on a major label..."
Now it's time for Atlantic to make the LP available on CD. Hmm..I wonder if the label’s lack of awareness of Golden's popularity and the failure of the music business to effectively make use of the Internet are related.

The socio-political issues of the late ‘60’s informed Lotti Golden’s art—religion, sex, abortion (or lack-thereof) homosexuality, spirituality, and a young woman’s search for self all thread the lyrics into a tapestry so vivid it plays like a movie. The LP “Motor-Cycle” is a time capsule and a treasure. Thanks for posting Golden on Hillary Clinton Army.

Carson Kreiger said...

Here’s an interesting thought: Hillary Clinton and Lotti Golden were contemporaries—do the math. When Hillary Clinton was giving her commencement address at Wellesley College in 1969, Lotti Golden’s “Motor-Cycle” had just been released on Atlantic Records. Where is she now? If Golden will be unveiling a new work, as suggested here, that’s newsworthy. PS: I enjoyed reading the comments.

Paintress Gretchen said...

I wonder if Hillary is hip to Lotti? You never know! I love this intriguing sub-plot!

By posting "Where is Lotti Golden?" el-change-o! has generated commentary that I, as a fan, personally appreciate—thank you! I only recently heard the LP "Motor-Cycle" which was initiated by a discussion of Amy Winehouse’s possible influences. I was truly moved by Golden’s work. As far as the math, re: Lotti Golden and Hillary being contemporaries--I think Lotti is probably a bit younger. For what it's worth, five or so years, from the early 60's to the height of the hippie movement could result in totally different worldviews. But what clear, is that art can be astute social commentary, and that's where Golden shines. As for political follow-through as the catalyst of change, that’s why I adore Hillary. Power to both of these trailblazers.

Oops! Please note typo correction to my post: "...different worldviews. But what clear.." Note the correction: "But what is clear..." Thanks!

On WFMU's DJ list, "WFMU's John Allen: Artists played" in the "L's" were, Lotti Golden, Lou Reed. I love Lou Reed, especially his work with the VU. I'm also a Patty Smith fan. In her new documentary, “Dream of Life” Smith said: “Life is an adventure of our own design, intersected by fate and a series of lucky and unlucky accidents. Although Golden received critical acclaim for “Motor-Cycle” I only wish circumstances would have led to the kind of commercial success that would have supported her career (at the time). There was only one follow-up LP, titled: “Lotti Golden"; I'm not familiar with it. But, as it has turned out, Golden is enjoying a resurgence on the Internet. And as some of these comments have suggested, we may be hearing from her soon. I imagine Golden has a lot to say. I, for one, can't wait!

I was totally blown away to find Lotti Golden's "Motor-Cycle" LP posted on your (very cool) blogspot. Golden's LP has stood the test of time. I loved it when it was released, and I heard it again not long ago. Its current popularity with a new generation of online fans demonstrates how Golden's work has transcended "period" classification. Although Golden obviously used the most contemporary musical interpretation available in the late 60's-early 70's, amazingly Golden's LP sounds as fresh today as it did then. Great art (like a Vermeer painting) communicates universal truths through the lens of its time period.

Anonymous said...

Another Golden fan here... Does anybody know how old Lotti is on the Motor-Cycle record? I hear she's in her teens! Incredible. I, too, have heard the rumors of her resurgence and her having some great things in the works, so I can't wait until we have more info on that! I also heard that she is still as beautiful as ever!!

A friend and fan of Lotti Golden recommended that I check out Hillary Clinton Army and read these omments. I must commend El-Change-O! for posting Golden. I’m always suggesting Golden's LP, which I agree not only sounds current, but also contains lyrics covering subjects that are relevant and provocative. I'm sorry this will be archived now, because I wish more people could see it. Maybe El-Change-O will post a Lotti Golden again.

Ditto the last blogger! I just came from a Halloween bash (in NYC) where Lotti Golden’s “A Lot Like Lucifer” rocked the house. Apparently the song was played on previous Halloween themed shows, e.g. http://whyfidelity.blogspot.com/2007/10/why-fidelity-96-lot-like-lucifer.html

Hey, all! I also hope El-Change-O will keep Lotti Golden current on the blog—at least every so often i.e. not only in the archives. Speaking of her “Motor-Cycle” LP being simultaneously topical and timeless “You Can Find Him” one of the tracks. mentions icons from the Buddha to Che Guevara. “Motor-Cycle” feels like a novel; it’s a good read—or a ‘movie’ as another comment suggested. BTW, the comments here are great.

Happy Halloween to all. I saw these posts, and agree that “It [Motor-Cycle] plays like a movie…” Golden’s LP would make a really good 60’s-70’s musical. Even though it’s recorded in a rock/R&B genre—(not “Broadway") it is so visual, I can see it as a movie or even a Broadway musical. It certainly would be authentic, more so than “Hair” or other musicals that were fashioned to fit the period (no criticism intended)—just making a point. (In fact, “Hair” had a revival this summer in NY at “Shakespeare in the Park.”) Maybe some astute producer will pick up on Golden.

What a treat to see these posts about Lotti Golden’s “Motor-Cycle.” The song “Gonna Fay’s” as described by El-Change-O is a perfect soundtrack for Halloween.
One of the comments mentioned that Mark Everett of the EELS sampled Golden in his song “What A Bringdown.” The sample is actually Golden’s spoken voice from the song "Gonna Fay's."
"What A Bringdown" can be found on “MC Honky – I Am The Messiah.” Mark is a genius in his own right, and he’s hip to Golden’s appeal. (Mark’s father Hugh Everett was a cult physicist who pioneered the theory of “parallel universes”.) Pretty interesting stuff.

My friend sent me to this blog. Lotti Golden is a goddess and this blogspot is incredible. El-Change-O! has done an outstanding job here, successfully merging arts and politics; she's an awesome Chief of Staff. I read the comments, and these folks are smart. Now I can't wait to see a Lotti Golden website. If you haven't heard Golden's Motor-Cycle LP, you " gotta, gotta, now..." That's from Golden's song "Get Together With Yourself."

I came across this while searching Lotti Golden. I've been trying to find out more about her current endeavors, and noticed she's got a website in the works. I thought the fans here might be interested. Coming: lottigolden.com, and there's a cool -gritty photo of Golden on a motorcycle. Anyway, I thought the comments on http://www.sunpk.com/art/cdart/sortofsunshinealbums.htm were balanced and on target, so I'm posting them here: "Lottie Golden - Motor-Cycle - Bob Crewe produced this abstract cutting edge drugged-out blue-eyed soul jam jazz pop blues rock ahead-of-its-time album by singer songwriter Lottie Golden released in 1969. Somewhat revolutioary for its time, two of the seven tracks clock in at over 8 minutes, one at over seven and the remaining four tracks are all over 5 minutes. Though Nyro-philes may want to crucify us, the last song, "You Can Find Him" out Nyro's Nyro...down to the gospel soul girl group a'la the Bluebelles in the background - certainly a testament to the great influence Laura Nyro's writing and style had on the time. And Joplin fans may also want to seek vengeance when we say they may want to hear how it's done without all that raspy screaming."

In this month's issue of Helmut Hair, an online mag for female bikers, there's a really good review of Golden's LP (Motor-Cycle) on Atlantic: http://www.helmethairmagazine.com/index.php/road-goddess-guide.html
Here's part of the review: "A velvety voice that is a mix between rock legend Janis Joplin and ...Aretha Franklin drives her album Motor-Cycle. The album takes listeners on a musical road trip back to 1969, where each song is a chapter in the bizarre story..."

Anonymous said...

I also saw the review in "Helmet Hair" in their "Road Goddess Guide" section. Lotti Golden is my road goddess. I've never heard anything like her LP "Motor-Cycle." It's as if it could have been released today--musically it's timeless--it's rock, it's jazz, it's honky-tonk, it's Motown, it's gospel. It's funny, sad, rapturous and cynical. The title of the review is "Feed your inner spirit: “Move with the Sky” ~ in fact, is in fact, including Golden's lyric "move with the sky" that appears in "Motor-Cycle Michael." The lyrics alone are worth the price of admission.

Just want to say "yes!" to the lovely ladies who created this website, and also to El-Change-O for starting this thread. It looks like Lotti Golden is going to be launching a website soon, and I wanted to share that information here. I have a copy of her original LP (took it from my sister)--she knew I wanted it. BTW, the original "Motor-Cycle" LP contains the lyrics, written in poetry form. I read the lyrics--hadn't for a long time. I still got chills; their impact hasn't changed. The lyrics alone are a true work of art. They say so much about teenage angst, finding ourselves, and so so much more.

It's one of my favorite bargain bin discoveries, too. My thumbnail description would be something like "A less histrionic Janis Joplin declaiming Jim Carroll lyrics backed by a big band on serious shrooms, signing about getting it on getting it on getting it on, on Robitussin, back in the days when it was a prescription drug."

Also interesting, though not quite as great, is the self titled (it might be listed in places as ". . . and i ain't lyin'") second album on GRT, released in 1972. She seems somewhat cowed a bit -- with a smaller band, and less outspoken, with some allusions to spending time in jail that make me wonder what happened to her or someone close to her. More blues influenced, too, and with some emphasis on her North Carolina roots, as i recall.

Hey, so many well-written comments here, but I'd like to respond to the latest...Aug 14. 2009. Anonymous’ thumbnail description of Lotti Golden's Motor-Cycle LP"A less histrionic Janis Joplin declaiming Jim Carroll lyrics..." The connection between Lotti Golden (Motor-Cycle and Jim Carroll (Basketball Dairies) is an excellent one—similarities in subject matter (probing the dark side, drugs, betrayal, rebirth, etc.) plus, both writers were quite young when they completed their respective tour de force opuses, arguably their best work. Is it that artists peak creatively at a certain point, or is it that they are so ahead of their time, if the pendulum swings toward a more conservative social order, these artists find it hard to duplicate the support and financial backing they originally received. I tend to think it’s the latter… but food for thought.

I enjoyed the "balanced" comment that was written July 18, 2009 and I do agree, it's a fair assessment. Yes, Golden's "You Can Find Him" is arguably Nyro-like, and that's probably a nod to Nyro from Golden, but what's really interesting, is the mention of the authenticity of the Bluebelles style background vocals, on Golden's tune. Turns out Lotti Golden actually wrote a song that Patti LaBelle And the Bluebelles recorded in 1969 titled "Dance to The Rhythm of Love." (Atlantic Discography). Can't get more authentic than that!

I just got a copy of Lotti Golden's Motor-Cycle (vinyl) and Wow, wow. Now I know what all of the discussion is about. The story, the vocals, the musical arrangements--the musicians on the LP, all are incredible. The mixing of genres is unusual, but it works well; it is all tied together under the banner of good old rock. I'm really impressed. (rossogood)

It's Halloween, the perfect time to listen to "A Lot Like Lucifer" by Lotti Golden.
Golden is a cult icon—(IMO should’ve been huge—a star). It's an inspiration that her tour de force LP “Motor-Cycle” continues to gain fans online. The downside is, of course, artists like Golden receive no royalties from online downloads. Many fans on Hillary Clinton Army have raised this very issue, and we can only hope that Atlantic will reissue “Motor-Cycle” on CD--so those of us who would like to purchase the CD (rather than download) with photos, lyrics etc. can do so on Itunes and other such outlets.

Golden's debut LP "Motor-Cycle" on Atlantic is an amazing work of art. With lyrics driven by a Kerouac inspired sensibility, Golden’s story of her life in New York’s East Village unfolds, and we are introduced to a Warholesque cast of characters, who come and go, while Golden's undergoes a personal metamorphosis. As you listen, you decrypt Golden’s layered meanings--well most of them anyway. The LP should come with a glossary but I hear the original did contain the lyrics written as poetry. A remarkable artistic undertaking.

"Gonna Fay's" written and performed by Lotti Golden is a killer song. It reminds me of Lou Reed's "Heroin," in that it covers certain similar subject matter, hmm, however Golden's take is mostly sarcastic commentary, and Reed's is real and urgent. Both greaat--two points of view. Also, Mark Everett (EELs) used a sample of Golden from "Gonna Fays." It's totally cool.
